Life’s Little Detours 50 Lessons to FIND and HOLD onto HAPPINESS by Regina Brett
While
Glenda was creating havoc allover Luzon, I know I had to keep myself distracted. The best way to get
distracted is to read J
Im
glad I chose to read this book by Regina Brett. For the past few days, I took
my time reading it. I read it a few lessons a day, I read while on the train
going to Makati while my seatmates were busy with their cellphones. I read it on my
way to our house in Taguig while classes were suspended. While reading, there
were moments that I would just stop and think about my life.
The author is an American journalist, a cancer survivor, a single mother for 18 years, graduated from college at the age of 30 and found love and got married at the age of 40. At 45, she started reflecting on the things life had taught her writing an essay for every lesson and turned it into a newspaper column. When she turned 50, she added 5 more lessons and had it published, saying, “These lessons are life’s gift to me, and mine to you.”

Out
of the 50, I selected 24 that had made an impact in the way I think about
myself and my life:
1.
Life isn’t fair, but it’s
still good.
2.
When
in doubt, just take the next right step.
3.
Life
is too short to waste time hating people.
4.
Don’t
take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5.
You
don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
6.
Cry
with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
7.
It’s
okay to get angry with God. He can take it.
8.
The most important sex
organ in the brain.
9.
God
never gives us more than we were designed to carry.
10. Make peace with your past
so it doesn’t screw up the present.
11. Don’t compare your life to
others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. If a relationship has to
be kept secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
13. Every thing can change in
the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.
14. A writer is someone who
writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
15. When it comes to going
after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
16. Forgive
everyone everything.
17. What other people think of
you is none of your business.
18. Frame
every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?
19. Whatever doesn’t kill you
really does make you stronger.
20. Envy
is a waste of time. You already have everything you truly need.
21. No matter how you feel,
get up, dress up and show up for life.
22. Life isn’t tied with a
bow, but it’s still a gift.
23. Believe
in miracles.
24. All
that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
Every
now and then, I will go back to this list and hopefully, I can add more lessons
to share with others.
